About The Series

Uganda hosts almost 2 million refugees. When a family arrives, they're given a plot of land, a cash grant, and two tarps. The tarps are built to last six months. The average length of displacement is a decade or more.

The Work of Home goes inside the programs Every Shelter is building in that gap — brick-mold lending cooperatives, shelter repair crews, a field-based design school, entire model villages — and follows the people making each one work.

"A refugee family shouldn't have to be an engineer to have a safe home. That's what outside expertise is for. But they should absolutely be the ones deciding what home looks like."
